The Definition
Institutional Intelligence is the organisational capability to preserve collective memory, connect distributed knowledge, reason across people and systems, and continuously improve decisions through governed collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence.
Unlike Artificial Intelligence, which concerns the capabilities of machines, Institutional Intelligence concerns the capabilities of organisations. Its purpose is not to replace human expertise, but to ensure expertise becomes a permanent organisational asset rather than remaining dependent upon individuals.
The Equation
Institutional Intelligence = Memory + Context + Reasoning + Learning + Governance
AI is not in the equation; AI is the enabler, not the definition.
The Three Memories
AI is the first technology capable of connecting all three, and in connecting them it creates a fourth: Collective Memory, experience preserved and connected across time, departments, people and systems.
